Let ‘s “Release Fish Correctly"

to have a better healthy marine ecosystem

The ocean is the origin of life, and nurtures all beings on Earth. However, the seas around Taiwan have been in the dilemma of declining marine productivity for thirty years. Now, the health and prosperity of the ocean are all that we are looking forward to.

With the aim to repair damaged marine ecosystems to help the Mother Ocean revitalization, TOFF has launched the“Ecosystem-based Fish Release”initiative with“Scientific Wisdom” from the expertise of marine scientists and experienced field operations. Under the initiative, there are all “Four Correct Principles” to release fish to ensure effective restoration of Taiwan's marine ecosystems : Correct Species, Time, Place, Method.

TOFF believes that the core idea of the “Ecosystem-based Fish Release”corresponds to what "Religious Release" holds, that is, to have a better healthy future for all beings and the ocean. Let’s pray for every fish released to swim freely and energetically under the sea, making the Mother Ocean reproduce forever.

Following the “Four Correct Principles”,
You can also release fish correctly.

Correct Species

In terms of species selection, try to select native species of medium-low trophic level, such as abalone, hard clam, sea urchin, spiny lobster, largescale blackfish, sea bream, circular batfish, barred knifejaw, clownfish, etc., and do not release alien species and hybrids.  Rather than domesticated adult fish, fishes released should be in the stage of fingerlings (baby fish) in considering their strong adaptability, so as to ensure that the fish can adapt well in the wild.

Correct Time

The suitable time to release fishes depends on their growth seasons. For example, sea breams are suitable for release in spring, while rock bream in summer and autumn. If fishes are released in the wrong season, that will increase the mortality of fishes released. In addition to seasons, daily tides need to be taken into account. Note that the most suitable time to release fishes is when the tide is rising to high tide, to avoid the fishes released being stranded or falling directly to the bottom of the sea due to low tide. If the hard clams are to be released, because the clams are sedentary and immobile species, they will die if left out of the water for too long, so it is suitable to be released at the lowest tide to ensure that the clams can immerse in seawater all day.

Correct Place

Taiwan's coastal environments vary from sandstones, reefs to coral reefs, and different species of fish have their own suitable environment. When releasing, in addition to considering the type of coast, it should be noted whether the location is the native environments for the species released, so as to avoid alien species invasion to the ecosystems.

Correct Method

Last but not least, only by using the correct method can the last mile of correct release be completed. According to the ecological characteristics of fishes released, choose the most suitable method for them. For example, the juveniles of the fourfinger threadfin have mucus on their surface, so it is not suitable to use the fish ladder. In addition, it is strictly FORBIDDEN to use the method of splashing for release, and letting the fishes enter the sea at high altitude will easily cause them to be injured or pass away.
